Press Release: The Importance of Trans* Inclusion
During the 2015 annual conference of the European Forum, in Merville, France, changes to the internal regulations and statutes were made to promote greater trans* inclusion in the organisation. The Forum wants to attract more transgender groups and ensure that trans* people are fully included in the work . Towards this aim the Forum offers a trans* pre-conference to provide a safe space for trans* Christians to discuss and share relevant issues and has changes the internal regulations to encourage trans* representation on the board.
In order to allow for the full diversity of gender identity the internal regulations state that:
For the purpose of these internal regulations we recognise three gender identities: male, female; and trans* as an umbrella term to include everyone who does not identify as either male or female.
These changes will come into effect from the elections in 2016.
The Reverend Sharon (Sahnon) Ferguson, co-president of the Forum said:
This is a very important change for the Forum because we must lead by example as we fight for full equality and justice for all God’s children regardless of sexual orientation and/or gender identity. It was truly heart-warming to witness the proposal being accepted unanimously by people from very different experiences and cultures.
Trans* is an inclusive umbrella term referring to people whose gender identity and/or gender expression differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. It includes, but is not limited to: men and women with transsexual pasts, and people who identify as transsexual, transgender, transvestite/cross dressing, androgyne, polygender, genderqueer, agender, gender variant or with any other gender identity and/or expression which is not standard male or female and express their gender through their choice of clothes, presentation or body modifications, including undergoing multiple surgical procedures and/or hormone treatments.
